“Once this city used to pulse with energy; dirty and dangerous, but alive and wonderful…”
Mirror’s Edge takes place in a futuristic city where nothing is private, everything is monitored. All information runs by the government and they decide if its dangerous or not, so to bypass this a illegal group of Runners (more like modern day Ninjas) transport any kind of information. Naturally, since this information isn’t being seen by the government the government wants to get a hold of it and stop all Runner’s activity.
“Now it is something else. The changes came slowly at first…”
You play as a young woman named Faith who lost her parents in a riot some years back. Faith chose the route of the Runners and works closely with Merc, kind of like her boss, to help her get jobs done. Faith’s sister on the other hand chose the other side of the law as a Police Officer. The game’s storyline comes into view when Faith’s sister is framed for the murder of the mayor candidate Robert Pope. The rest is for you to find out in the game.
“…most did not realize or did not care and accepted them. They chose a comfortable life…”
This game was most definitely awesome. As many game reviews have said it offers a new twist to the action genre, and this is highly accurate. Just as in 007, Halo or any first person shooter you see the aspect in first person, only take away the gun and obtain the characteristics of a Ninja and off through the city you go. The best way to explain exactly what the game is like is this: take Parkour, add a storyline and a few hundred bad guys with a couple of fancy Ninja moves and you’ve got yourself a good game. I was able to beat the game in one sitting, however it can be quite frustrating as the levels become more and more like puzzles. One of the cool things about this is that even when you beat the game you can go into ‘race’ mode and race against the clock on your favorite courses.
“…some didn’t. They became our clients.”
There’s only a few things I’m actually disappointed in though, and that would be the cinematics. The did the actually game-play in a beautiful 3D CGI environment but did the cinematics in a cartoon like visual. If you’ve ever played XII for the original Xbox, just imagine that though not as cheesy. They could have developed the story line a little more, maybe added a few more twists and turns in there. They did leave the storyline open-ended though so there is a possibility there will be a sequel.
After all is considered I’d give this game an overall rating of 8/10. I myself would have liked to have seen a third-person option just for kicks and the 3D CGI cinematics would have made it that much better. All-in-all it’s a good buy and if you beat the game as fast as I did there’s always the achievements to do.
Happy gaming!
